When to See a Perinatologist
You may see a maternal-fetal medicine doctor, or perinatologist, if you have an increased risk of complications during pregnancy due to:
- Being 35 or older
- Carrying multiples (twins or more)
- Having diabetes
- Having a history of premature labor
- Having high blood pressure (hypertension)
- Having kidney disease
- Being obese
Your Expert MFM Team
You’ll receive a custom care plan for you and your baby. Your dedicated MFM specialist will collaborate with your obstetrician (OB-GYN) to keep you and your baby as healthy as possible. Depending on your medical needs, your coordinated MFM team may also include:
- Breastfeeding and lactation specialists
- Pediatric sonographer
- Reproductive and genetic counselors
- Social workers
- Neonatologists
Prenatal Testing & Screenings
To evaluate your baby’s growth and development, you might receive:
- Routine and specialized ultrasounds – Check your baby’s health
- Fetal echocardiogram – Helps diagnose heart defects that are present at birth (congenital)
- Amniocentesis – Checks if your baby has a genetic or chromosomal condition, such as Down syndrome, Edwards' syndrome, or Patau's syndrome
Comprehensive Care
You’ll get the care you need as an expecting mother throughout pregnancy and delivery. You may benefit from:
- Pre-conception counseling – Addresses health issues and risk factors before you get pregnant
- Diabetes care – Helps manage your condition during pregnancy
- Genetic counseling – Helps determine the risk your baby may have for a birth defect or genetic disorder
- Inpatient consultation and care – Provides coordinated care during a hospital stay
- Intrauterine transfusion – Injects red blood cells from a donor into a fetus with low red blood cell count (anemia)
- Cervical cerclage – Closes the cervix with stitches to prevent preterm birth
Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
If your baby is born premature or needs extra medical attention, they’ll receive care at JPS Health Network. JPS has a team of highly skilled neonatologists and neonatal nurse practitioners.
