The John Peter Smith Hospital District and the Department of Psychiatry has embarked on a comprehensive redesign of mental health services for Tarrant County, Texas. The Department is highly collegial, and values evidence-based clinical practice and a commitment to teaching.

The outpatient services are designed around a collaborative multi-disciplinary team that includes psychiatrically trained Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Social Workers and a nursing staff that is experienced, committed and collaborative.  Faculty has the opportunity to supervise residents in psychiatry, family medicine and emergency medicine, medical students, physician assistant students and nurse practitioner students. The Department of Psychiatry staffs the John Peter Smith Hospital Network’s Child and Adolescent services in five (5) Outpatient Clinics in Tarrant County.  The C&A clinics operate various days and half days Monday through Friday. 

Faculty will provide leadership, direct clinical care, and administrative supervision of clinical services in the outpatient clinic through comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment planning. Weekend inpatient call occurs approximately once every 10-12 weeks. Candidate must be willing to treat adults as well as adolescents when on call.

The Psychiatric Emergency Center is located on the 10th floor of John Peter Smith Hospital’s main building and is the only Psychiatric Emergency Center in Tarrant County. A highly skilled team of Psychiatrists, Advanced Practice Providers, nurses, social workers and support personnel provide 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week services for people in mental health crisis, both voluntary and involuntary services. People can receive triage, evaluation, observation and admission services.

The chosen leader will be an expert in team building, and be responsible for overseeing and managing the Primary Care provider staff in the outpatient setting. The Vice Chief will be an active participant in the development of long and short term plans for the Primary Care Service Line, Acclaim and JPS Network, and will work towards optimizing the practice environment, enhancing quality care coordination, and establishing a series of goals across the continuum of community medicine.

JPS treats a predominantly vulnerable complex patient population and offers comprehensive care across 30+ NCQA Level 3 certified Patient Centered Medical Homes (PCMH) and school based clinics throughout Tarrant County. The JPS Family Medicine residency is the largest in the country and speaks to the heart of the Network’s academic mission.

The Vice Chief will report directly to the Acclaim Service Line Chief of Primary Care who also serves as the Chair of Family Medicine at the TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine. All Primary Care Service line Medical Directors will report to the Vice Chief.

As an expert in clinical practice across the spectrum of care, the Vice Chief of Primary Care Service Line will help lead Acclaim/ JPS Network efforts to create systems that ensure primary care’s continuum is complete even for the most complex patients by:

  • Coordinating and setting expectations/goals with the Chief of Primary Care Service Line in order to optimize the practice environment
  • Being accountable for establishing and meeting local and organizational goals that strive for optional work processes and the highest quality of patient care services.

  • Acting as first line supervisor to the primary care physicians and Advanced Practice Providers  in the primary care service line

Required Education and Experience:

  • Current Medical Doctor (M.D) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) degree from an accredited school of medicine.
  • Residency and/or Fellowship training within specialty.

  • Current, unrestricted medical license to practice in the State of Texas.
  • Vascular Board Certified or Board Eligible

Located in Arlington, TX, this large clinic provides primary care, women’s health, dental, laboratory, radiology and a pharmacy under one roof.

The Department of Family Medicine staffs the JPS Primary Care services at 12 Patient Centered Medical Homes and 19 school based clinics across Tarrant County. The patient panel for this provider would be mostly Internal Medicine.

Schedule – Monday - Friday

Duties and Essential Job Functions:

  1. Coordinates the multidisciplinary care delivered to all patients, to optimize patient care.
  2. Reviews patient medical charts to diagnose, treat, and provide care management and education to patients and families.
  3. Makes appropriate patient referrals as necessary.
  4. Monitors guidelines for the management of care and for ensuring the services are delivered in compliance with the guidelines established by JPS Health Network and Acclaim Physician Group.

In addition to providing great care, JPS is also an urban teaching hospital with a long history of training physicians and medical students.    JPS offers 18 residency and fellowship programs.  With 72 resident slots, the JPS Family Medicine residency is the largest in the country.

We are looking for someone who thrives in leading a team of primary care and mid-level providers, in a patient-centered medical home setting. Management experience combined with clinical expertise, experience working with residents, and a passion for helping patients are a must.  We also have medical students from UNT and UTSW pre-cepting in these clinics.

Locations:

The Family Health Center is located on the 4th floor of JPS Hospital just south of downtown Fort Worth.

The Stop 6 Clinic is located in east Fort Worth, easily accessible from highway 287. 

Medical Directors provide direct patient care in the clinics, in addition to their administrative duties.  In fact, 80% of the Medical Director’s role with be clinical in nature – providing compassionate care to a panel of patients.  Administratively, the Medical Director will plan, organize, direct and coordinate the services provided in the clinic, and be responsible for issues such as healthcare quality, patient safety, chronic disease management, operational improvement and information management.

As a role model to other providers, the Medical Director must demonstrate personal excellence in the areas of Patient Satisfaction, Quality and Stewardship.   They are expected to be leaders with a commitment and ability to drive organizational initiatives and lean processes.  You must be able to coach performance in physicians and mid-level’s, and develop effective actions plans for achieving metrics.

Requirements:

  • Must have a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor or Osteopathy degree from an approved college of Medicine/Osteopathy
  • Must be board certified in either Family Medicine or Internal Medicine
  • Must have an active, and unrestricted Texas Medical license, or must be eligible to apply for one.  License must be active prior to start date
  • Valid DEA certificate with prescriptive authority
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years of clinical experience
  • Must have a minimum of 1 year in a clinical leadership role.  3 or more years is preferred
  • Must be comfortable working in a large public/county facility
